CIS-103 Windows Assignment by Frank Coyne

Note: CCP switched over to Office 2007 in Sept'07. All the machines in the school are geared to this word processor. You can find links to access Word by icons on the screen, at quick launch and on the start button

Note: If you want to try to do this exercise at home, you will not be able to use the Q shared drive that is only available at CCP. Therefore, if you are serious about doing this exercise and can't do it at school, your instructor will make available CD with this info. The CD is organized in a similar manner to the school with a folder designated as Q. Below that is a folder designated as Computer Technologies and below that is fmcoyne. So, keeping in mind that the Q shared drive is emulated by Q, and Computer Studies is emulated by Compurter Technologies, you can follow this problem by using this CD.

  • Open Word and minimize it.
  • Press start button, programs, Accessories, windows explorer
  • Using the left hand side (root directory), scroll down to the q:\ drive.
  • Using the plus signs in the root directory, open the folder titled Computer Studies.
  • Using the plus signs in the root directory, open the sub-folder fmcoyne
  • Using the plus signs in the root directory, open the sub-folder, titled CIS-103.
  • Open the sub-folder titled Chapters 1 & 2
  • Copy & Paste a picture of the Q:\ drive to your Word Document
  • Move the contents of the Chapters 1 & 2 to your removable drive. To do this: Use the Edit command on the menu bar and click on Select All, then right mouse click on one of the blue highlighted files and select send to from the drop down menu. Send the files to the removable disk
  • Scroll up to the removable drive on the left side of your windows screen, click on the removable drive
  • Create the following 5 folders: your name, Yellowstone Park, Logos, Recreation, and Personal.
  • In the Yellowstone Park folder create the following sub-folders: Administrative, Budgetary
  • On the left side of the window show all folders and sub-folders in the removable drive
  • Copy and paste a picture of the above into your Word document.
  • Move the following files: Budget96.wks, budget97.wks, parkcost.wks into the budgetary sub-folder
  • Move the following files: agenda.doc, minutes.wps, proposal.doc, tools.wks, resume.doc into the administrative sub-folder.
  • Move the following files: sales.wks, members.wdb to the Yellowstone Park folder.
  • Move the following files: logo.bmp, newlogo.bmp, to the Logos folder.
  • Move the following files: exterior.bmp, interior.bmp, opus27.mid, travel.wps into the Recreation folder.
  • Copy and paste a picture of the completed page to your Word document.
  • Put your name in the header
  • Print the Word document.

    Supplemental to Frank Coyne’s assignment.

Modern operating systems refer to files, shortcuts and folders as objects. In Microsoft operating systems, objects can be selected by a click on that object. A control click (the control key depressed while clicking) can add or subtract from the objects already selected.

To select all the objects, use control A ( the control key depressed while clicking A).

To further help selection, you can use the shift key. Click an object and then somewhere below or above, click a different object with the shift key depressed. Notice that all the intervening objects become selected (or deselected if they had already been selected)

You can further select objects visually using the lasso technique. Assuming that you are on large icon view, move your mouse somewhere and then with left button depressed, create a rectangle. Objects within this rectangle will be selected

Try this assignment using point and click. Move your cursor over the files and double click to get the operating system to load your the application associated with the file and then the file into the application
